Birthing Complications

Delivery of a healthy child is dependent on many factors, including timing of a doctor’s actions or emergency C-section delivery and his or her skills in using delivery-assistance instruments. An error before, during or immediately after delivery can result in devastating trauma to the infant and/or mother.

Injuries to the child can include oxygen depravation that results in death, brain damage, developmental disorders, Erb’s palsy, cerebral palsy, cerebral hypoxia, as well as brachial plexus palsy, shoulder dystocia, muscle injury and scarring. A child who suffers injuries during the birthing process may require expensive, lifelong care.

Mothers can suffer C-section complications, uterine rupture and death.

Birthing complications can be caused by failure to respond to or recognize unusual bleeding, untreated umbilical cord entrapment or compression, or distress of any kind that the doctor or hospital could have prevented.

A long delivery also can have adverse effects on an infant. Medical negligence can include delaying ordering or performing a caesarean section, misuse of a labor drug such as Pitocin, imprecise use of a vacuum extractor or forceps, inadequate resuscitation, failure to monitor the newborn after birth and failure to properly treat infections.

Children also can be injured by failure prevent premature birth. Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL) and Intraventricular Hemorrhage (IVH) are often found in premature infants and cause irreversible brain damage. IVH may be due to cerebral hypoxia or prolonged ischemia.
