Heart Arrhythmia / Rhythm Disorders
An arrhythmia is a change in the regular beat of the heart. The heart may seem to skip a beat or beat irregularly or very fast or very slowly. Many times, there is no recognizable cause of an arrhythmia. Environmental factors such as stress, caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, diet pills, and cough and cold medicines can contribute to arrhythmia. It can even occur in people who do not have underlying heart disease.
In some people, arrhythmia is associated with heart disease. The heart disease or the arrhythmia may present significant medical issues. In these instances, arrhythmia requires medical treatment such as drugs or surgery to keep the heartbeat regular. If left untreated, serious arrhythmia might cause the heart to stop beating and result in death.
Medical providers must make sure proper treatment is administered. If a misdiagnosed or ignored arrhythmia results in a wrongful death, the healthcare provider can be held accountable.
